Colour coated coil, widely known as PPGI (Pre-Painted Galvanized Iron), is galvanized steel that has been cleaned, chemically treated, primed and finished with baked-on paint in a continuous coil coating line. Because the coating is applied to the flat strip and cured under controlled conditions before the steel is formed, the finish is far more even and durable than paint applied to a finished product on site.
The build-up matters. Beneath the colour sits the zinc layer, which does the corrosion protection; the paint provides the appearance, UV resistance and a second barrier. A typical specification quotes a top coat of 15–25 microns over a 5–7 micron primer, with a thinner backing coat on the reverse.
The paint system determines how long the colour lasts. Regular and silicon-modified polyester (RMP / SMP) suits most commercial roofing and is the usual economical choice. PVDF costs considerably more but holds its colour and gloss far longer under strong sun, which is why it is specified on prestige and long-life buildings.
PPGI is supplied in coil for roll-forming into profiled roofing and cladding sheet, or flat in cut lengths. Because the paint is already cured, formed sheets need no site painting and go up ready to use.
