Galvanized Plain (GP) is steel coil or sheet that has been hot-dip coated with zinc on both faces. The strip runs continuously through a bath of molten zinc, which bonds metallurgically to the steel and forms a barrier that protects it from moisture and corrosion.
Zinc protects in two ways. It physically seals the steel from air and water, and it also protects sacrificially — if the coating is scratched, the surrounding zinc corrodes in preference to the exposed steel, so rust does not creep under the coating the way it does beneath paint. This is why galvanized steel lasts outdoors where plain mild steel would not.
The coating mass, quoted in grams per square metre across both surfaces, is the main thing to specify. A heavier coating such as Z275 lasts considerably longer in an exposed or coastal environment than a light Z80, at a higher cost. ‘Plain’ simply distinguishes flat GP from corrugated or profiled galvanized sheet.
